Valeria Card Kingdoms

Valeria Card Kingdoms is a game I was fortunate enough to demo this year at Origins Game Convention in Columbus Ohio.

It is a tableau building game (Similar to Machi Koro if you're familiar with that) in which you roll dice to gain resources from various citizen cards you aquire on your turns, that you will exchange for various other cards on your turn. To put it more simply, you get cards that give you stuff when certain numbers on a die are rolled. You then use that stuff to buy more cards to give you, you guessed it, even more stuff.

Inflation tends to be a thing in this game as towards the end of the game everyone has alot of stuff, but the game does not disappoint in what you can do as a player to spend your stuff. You can slay monsters with might and magic that will earn you victory points (and stuff), you can buy citizens to get you more stuff from the dice being rolled, or you can buy domain cards for special powers and even more victory points (and stuff).

Each player has a multitude of options to individualise their resource gathering, in addition to how they want to spend their turn. The concept is quick to learn (5-10 minutes) but with the complexity of the card interactions a clear strategy can take time to develop.

Every time you roll the dice, you'll earn their corresponding resources. In this game if you rolled a 2 and a 3 you'd gather resources from the 2 card, the 3 card AND the 5 card. This allows you to gain "stuff" in many unique ways. Each game you play can be very unique, because aside from the starting cards, there's 2 versions of each corresponding numbered citizen, each providing something different. This allows you for very custom games and a highly replayable game.

With the base game box, you have more than enough to play multiple times without getting bored, but if expansions are your thing, or you plan on playing a ton. There are two bigger expansions available, and 6 mini booster expansions each adding more card variations to the game. You don't have to worry about storage because the main box seems to accommodate the additional cards very well, each containing dividers for the card sorting as well.

Card Kingdoms of Valeria has some very interesting art as well as a very balanced game play. It accommodates 1-5 players with a solo variant if you're interested in that, or the expansions can allow a 6th player as well. Each additional player you add does add considerable length to the overall game, but it's still something achievable in around an hour if everyone's not too distracted.

I've played this 4-5 times now, and trying the same strategy (not optimized for the cards in play) for my purposes of testing, I've had dominating victory, I've come dead last, and everywhere between. So you need to pay attention to the cards that are available to you, and rely on a little bit of luck.
